The Noida Web Dev Trap: Design Studio vs. Engineering Team

This week’s issue is a short one, prompted by a conversation I keep having with founders and small business owners in Delhi NCR: “We hired a web design company. Why don’t we have a website?”
The answer is almost always the same. They hired a design company, not a development company, and nobody explained the difference before the contract was signed.
Here’s the distinction, in plain terms:
Design = how it looks. Layout, branding, the user’s path through the site. Deliverable: screens, usually in Figma.
Development = how it works. The code, the database, the CMS your team edits content in, and any integrations you need — CRM, booking, payments. Deliverable: an actual, functioning website.
A lot of agencies market themselves as “full-service” but really only do one of these well. You find out which one when the invoice for “phase two” shows up.
Three questions that expose the gap fast, before you sign anything:
“Can you show me three sites you both designed and built?” Not sites where you only handled the visuals.
“Who owns the CMS admin after launch?” A vague answer means you’re likely only getting a design file.
“What’s the process if I need a new page type in eight months?” A real dev team already has an answer.
There’s a fourth category worth flagging too: CMS-first builds. If your team needs to publish blog posts or edit pricing without looping in a developer every time, that’s a CMS question, not a design question. A standard WordPress build in Noida typically runs ₹40,000–₹90,000; a custom CMS wired into your CRM or internal tools starts around ₹1,50,000 and scales from there.
